Learn Te Reo Māori

Whāia te iti kahurangi, ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei!
Pursue that which is precious and do not be deferred by anything less than a lofty mountain!

The original palings that stand guard at the entrance to the Government gardens were painted by Tene Waitere about a hundred years ago. They have since between restored to their former glory about 1990.

Rotorua Library has some excellent resources to help you learn te reo Māori and many of them are available to borrow from the library. These include picture books for children, dictionaries and language guides as well as books about te reo Māori.

We also provide access to apps and websites where you can log in with your library card as well as other useful links to help you on your journey.

Waiata Mai

First Wednesday of each month 12.15pm - 1pm
Another great way to learn and practice te reo Māori is by singing waiata and hearing the correct pronunciation of the kupu (words). Waiata Mai is a community-orientated session where everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy singing. Held in the Community Pride Space on the ground floor, Waiata Mai is led by guitarist Clark Pirika and he is joined by Library and Council staff, weekly waiata attendees, members of the public and anyone who is keen to join in. All the words are on the big screen so come along and sing waiata with us!
